How to Use the Fetal Doppler

Best Times to Monitor Your Baby’s Heartbeat:
For the most accurate and stable readings, use the fetal doppler during quiet, relaxed moments of your day:

  • Within 30 minutes after waking up in the morning

  • Within 60 minutes after lunch

  • Within 30 minutes before bedtime

These periods help ensure your baby is relatively calm and easier to detect.

Locating the Fetal Heartbeat – Position Guide

Use the following reference to find the most likely areas to detect the fetal heartbeat, depending on your stage of pregnancy:

First Trimester (12–24 Weeks):

  • Focus around the area just below your belly button

  • Try 5 points below the left, center, and right side of the navel

Second Trimester (24–32 Weeks):

  • Check the midline of the belly, between the navel and about 4 points lower

  • Gently move the probe along this line to locate the clearest sound

Third Trimester (32–40 Weeks):

  • Begin near the navel and scan outward at an angle (diagonally)

  • Use the probe to trace four directions from the belly button in a slanted pattern

Tips for Best Results:

  • Lie down and relax before using the doppler

  • Apply a small amount of ultrasound gel or baby oil to reduce static

  • Move the probe slowly and patiently—heartbeats can shift as your baby moves

  • Adjust the angle slightly if you hear interference or only faint sounds

Always consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns about your baby’s heart rate or movement.
